Welcome to my oil pastel studio. A place to share thoughts on oil pastels primarily, art in general and my current art portfolio.
OP, as it’s sometimes referred to, is my medium of choice for painting. Over time we’ll explore a variety of subjects on oil pastels (OPs) from brands, to techniques used, work-in-progress, and you’ll be introduced to people or books that have had a positive impact on my art.
So come on in, take a few minutes and explore my world of oil pastels. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or post a comment. I’m looking forward to connecting with you! Mary

I love your paintings – I’ve recently treated myself to my first set of oil pastels, and slowly learning about them – they are fantastic! (although my artistry is not quite in keeping
I’m looking forward to perusing your blog more thoroughly – it looks wonderfully inspiring!
Hi Lu, so very nice of you – thank you for your beautiful comment! Also I appreciate that you’ll be following my blog – it’s a work in progress, but a happy one at that! I’m headed over to your blog to see your lovely art. Thanks so much – nice to meet you! Mary
eek – you won’t find art on it yet! Maybe in due course..I’m just getting the creative juices flowing…
Well your knitting is very creative and wonderful! Anyways you’ll enjoy your oil pastels for sure.
I really enjoy your beautiful site, Mary. And I hope you don’t mind being nominated for a blog award.:) I just nominated you for a Sunshine Award. Please click here for more info: http://eyedancers.wordpress.com/2013/02/05/the-sunshine-award/ . Thanks! — Mike
Hi Mike, thank you so much for the wonderful nomination – I really appreciate it. I have two other in the wings that I still need to work on, plus this month I’m hosting a painting challenge which has me occupied. If you don’t mind that I wait a couple of weeks I’d be thrilled to accept!
I’m really honored that you’ve taken time to visit my blog and me for the Sunshine Award.
Thanks for dropping by. Funny, I have tried every medium except for oil pastels. So I’ll certainly keep looking in for some tips. Cheers. David
Thanks David. Oil Pastels are a great medium to work with once you get a feel for how they handle. Many people make the mistake of using student quality first (these are hard and a more waxy consistency – harder to move and blend). Go with artist quality and you’ll find a softer pastel that’s easier to handle. I have a short discussion under another post.
Great work and inspiration, love it very much make me smile.
Amazing blog and amazing paintings! Do you mind if I ask, how long have you been studying and working? I have been studying five years but I feel there is still so much to learn, it’s a never ending process
Thank you so much for visiting my blog and writing such a beautiful comment. I’m a new self-taught artist painting or a little under 1 1/2 years now, learning what I can from reading books and being an active member of several online art communities – experienced artists have offered countless words of advice and encouragement. The joy of painting for me is the endless learning and discovery, giving way to the ah-ha’s and hopefully showing growth in my pieces.
Thank you so much for the compliment ~ my personal opinion is that for most artists, true growth comes from a disciplined eye to practice and experiment.
