Watching bulky waves rolling into shore, is a perfect pastime for me. These types of waves are fascinating, mesmerizing gifts that the ocean gives to passerby’s every day. Then when the sun hits these gorgeous thick waves just right a kaleidoscope display of beautiful colors and shadows appear – a showcase made-up of interesting forms, lines and sea-foam spray. I could sit and watch the action all day long.
Finally I was able to paint this type of wave in oil pastels (8×10) using an underpainting of soft pastels complete with an alcohol wash. It was a joy painting this scene – hope you enjoy!
I think you and I have been looking at the same waves Mary 😉
But oh my – how you have captured the essence of it, is well … Incredible !
Hi Poppy, thank you so much. Oil pastel is a great medium for painting waves and this was a lot of fun to play with lots of colors and layers.
Beautiful painting.
Great colors in the wave.
Hi Petronette, thank you so much for your comments. The wave was fascinating to watch form through the layers of oil pastels – was great fun!
Beautiful work, Mary – I love the colours in this – it’s so complex and rich! It has power and intensity and movement and life! Brilliant.
Oh Dawn, thank you so much for your wonderful comments on Rolling – wow! There is nothing like the power of solid, strong waves – we have no chance to tame them. I really enjoy the experience of painting them up close – thank you!!
I can feel the current pulling these glorious waves Mary! Your color is sensational!
Oh Elena what a wonderful comment – so glad that you felt the pull of the sea. I filled the tooth totally up with the oil pastels this time, no room left for anymore color. Thank you so much!!
I can see it now. A fancy art gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York with all your ocean and beach scenes filling the walls. This is beautiful and such movement and energy is shown.
Oh my, wow what a vision!! Thanks so much you’re comments have made my evening, now I can dream of such a possibility ~
Wow, the translucency of the water on the shore is amazing! Love this!
Hi Cyndi, thank you – wow so glad you noticed! The translucency was getting away from me and was able to save it enough before I lost all the tooth to the surface.
Yes, it’s amazing that Poseidon continuously gargles with salt water…
Thank you Ariel’s Prospero – so right! It’s one thing that remains constant for us – thank goodness for that big fickle Poseidon!
I could get lost in this painting. Wonderful!!!
Hi Kara, so nice to see you! Thank you so much, I really appreciate your comment because it’s what I was hoping for anyone viewing this piece!!

Such an amazing job!!
Thank you so much Benjamin, much appreciated! It was so much fun, just getting into the scene. I may try this again using Gouache as the underpainting, will have to see. Thanks!! Mary
