Pumpkin, 2013 – oil pastel

This weeks word challenge contained:  orange, pumpkin and spooky.  Got two out of three words and had a ball.

Halloween is just about here, this is my way of starting the bewitching hour!  This is an oil pastel, 7×5 on pastel paper.

Hope you enjoy!

I can feel the surface of that pumpkin, Mary. The color is absolutely RICH! in this.

    • Mary says:

Thanks Leslie, this was lots and lots of layers of color built up. One of the reasons why I love oil pastels, you can get a really rich appearance (or mud [ugh] if you aren’t careful).

Mary … What a Powerful Pumpkin with its Glowing Orange and its Purple Rage Suffused Stem 🙂
    Love it !!

    • Mary says:

Different for me, right Poppy? Thanks very much – the composition is what caught my attention and the oil pastels gave the richness that this Fall vegetable deserves.

  6. Oh this fabulous ! What wonderful color and love the composition Mary.

    • Mary says:

Hi Emily, wonderful hearing from you – the composition is what caught my attention. I really enjoyed myself developing the skin of the pumpkin. Thanks, I saw your great pumpkin/squash photographs – loved them all!

  7. A marvelous pumpkin Mary! I’ve always found the stems to be quite expression, and your’s is fantastic!

    • Mary says:

Hi Elena, thanks so much! The stem took the longest to develop, for exactly the reason you mentioned,, so a lot of colors went into it and eventually it started showing itself.

  8. ArtbyLinz says:

    Love, love, LOVE!!!! ❤ 🙂 🙂

  9. Wow Mary, your shades and shadows give that pumpkin a realistic feel. The colors are so bright and happy, definitely not spooky… heehee, but I love it! 😀 Great talent!

    • Mary says:

Hi Patricia, thanks very much – this one went very quick for me (which is surprising) and really enjoyed mixing and blending the OPs on this piece. Glad you are enjoying the bright colors, thought this would appeal to you!

    I like it very much.

  12. Craig says:

No spook about it – happy icon of autumn.

    • Mary says:

Hi Craig, thank you – nothing like the colors of Autumn to close out the warm weather. The pumpkin reminds me of apple cider and donuts we used to have when growing up.

  13. Francesca says:

I thought it was a photo! Beautiful, Mary!
