Forest Sounds – study, oil pastel

Today I’ve been working on a study for a larger painting.  I’m not totally sold that the forest scene works, probably because of the background.  Although every time I look at it new possibilities keep emerging for changes that could enhance the background forest.

Hope you are having a great day – our temperature is in the high 70’s today, tomorrow it’s expect to fall 50+ degrees and we’ll be in for rain and sleet.  That’s TX weather for you.  So I’m going out to play in the nice weather before it changes.

Wanted to show you what I’ve been up to.  What do you think about this forest scene?  Perhaps the next time you see it the background will have a totally different look ~ guess we’ll all see .  .  .

I like the warm colors poking through the background, Mary. I also like the texture in this which seems to give the painting energy, like the hint that the trees are not really sleeping through the winter. Beautiful.

Hi Leslie, thanks for your feedback and I’m thinking of getting a bit more dark in the background. Will play around this is scene a little more I think later this week. Thanks again!

  3. You are wetting my appetite for snow! It’s in the 60’s in NJ today-too warm.

    • Mary says:

If you can believe it, we woke up to 1 inch of ice and sleet and will continue through this afternoon. TX doesn’t know how to handle snow, let alone ice – just hoping our tree branches don’t start coming down. Thanks and I’ll bet this lovely weather is headed your way!

  4. Ah, Mary, such a beautiful forest and I can hear the sounds too!!! 🙂 xx

I am trying to imagine the new look you will give to it, I can’t wait to see it.

I like it: I find the touch of evergreens on the right in the background intriguing, it gives the painting a subtle touch of color and keeps the scene alive.

    • Mary says:

Thanks Stefano appreciate your thoughts. I’m going back in today – I want to work out some ideas and see if they hold up in the scene.

Thanks Jorge! I see interesting patterns and colors forming when I look at the piece, yes – I believe I’ll be going back in to change it a bit.

It’s amazing to watch your work develop, almost like watching time lapse
