Personal Challenge Rocks/Boulders Studies – #9 Boulders Acadia National Park

#9 is another study of Maine boulders – hard to resist all the great formations in that region of the country.

Acadia National Park an oil pastel study (5×7) of an area in Bar Harbor, ME along the loop road drive – a great way to see the park.  A beautiful area that is rich in heritage and long on scenic views of the mountains and ocean.  And, talk about rock formations – in this particular spot the boulders are huge slabs hugging the shoreline.  Also check out the water colors, both reflecting the deep, rich green forestry and sky – unless it’s a gray day, the water colors are always cold and gorgeous.

Thanks for checking in on the studies, only 6 more to go!

  1. Hi Mary, I’ve been away from blogging for a while. Now I can sit back and enjoy a back log of your work. These rocks are (forgive me), rock’in! Well done!

Hi Elena, I’m so happy that you visited – I know you are busy so it means a lot to see you again. Appreciate your enthusiasm, keep on – keeping it on!

I would have to say painting rocks is one of your many strong suits! So beautiful! Makes me feel like I’m right there.

Wow Mary! This is absolutely stunning!

  6. M-R says:

This one is particularly fine, Mary !! – maybe it’s the larger area, dunno; but it’s a very appealing work !!

  7. This is very impressive, love the rock formations, really huge and prominent! Beautiful scene perfectly executed! Really enjoy your challenge, looking forward always to see your next one!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Eva – I loved finally painting this scene, very typical of Bar Harbor region. There are so many great samples/examples of rocks and boulders – this is a subject that I’m not at a loss of what to paint next. Thanks for checking in with the challenge, it’s all leading up to a large painting of a Maine scene that I’ll painting – these challenges have been great in learning and preparing.

  8. What a great location to choose here, Mary!

  9. restlessjo says:

    Another lovely scene, Mary 🙂

  10. Beautiful spot you chose to paint! Your art is always very restful to the eye, it must be a pleasure to work on it 🙂

  11. ladyfi says:

    A lovely painting!

  12. One of my very favorite National Parks. Is by any chance your painting representing Jordan Pond?
    Lovely in any case.

    • Mary says:

Hi Evelyne, I think that this particular place was on the coast – because I have a shot further back showing more the shoreline and these rocks were in the mid-ground. I’m not sure which hills were in the background, it was so long ago that I shot the photograph that I based the painting off it (ha – took myself out of the scene for the painting).

  13. Oh beautiful Acadia, how I miss thee! Your beautiful painting brings it back to me. Thank you Mary.

  14. Lovely, peaceful, and colorful. Mary, how are you doing protecting your paintings? Are you able to track down the people who are stealing your work?

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much – we are engaged in a cease and desist, hoping we won’t have to take it any further. Will be going back out and checking mid-October. Thank you for asking – this is a very frustrating thing with the internet.

  15. Top drawer work as always, Mary. Excellent!

  16. sefeniak says:

    Enjoyed! Beautifully done.

  17. cindy knoke says:

A park I have never seen. Love it~

    • Mary says:

Thank you Cindy – it’s a place that hope one day it goes on your bucket list. Only thing though, take the trip in the summer months because from October through to May-end it’s buttoned up. During the Winter months you’ll find very few people around and places to sleep, eat or shop aren’t opened (I found out the hard way one October).

  18. A.PROMPTreply says:

Oh, very nice. I also love rocks of any sort. This is great (to my untrained eye anyway).

  19. It looks like a very special place… beautifully and well done, Mary!!!

  20. Just perfect, Mary…..I’m getting so I can tell when you’re painting something you love….bravo!
