I’ve had to step back and re-directed my energies on family matters – one day I’ll explain. But for now, I’m back to say hello to all my friends on WP!
I haven’t done much with art, but recently began painting again it was so long since I worked with color – trust me, I was rusty. So I looked around the youtube for some inspiration and came across Will Kemp’s video’s – for me, it was time well spent. He’s a good instructor both for acrylics and mixing colors, I learned a lot and decided to do a couple studies of his tutorials. Yellow Apple is one of the studies I recently painted.
Yellow Apple, an acrylic painting (8×10) done on a heavily gessoed hardboard using Liquitex and Windsor Newton brands. My personal twist on the painting, was to create a heavily textured surface by using a palette knife and scraping heavy layers of gesso onto the hardboard. The painting was completed with many layers of acrylic paints, from the underpainting to the background and apple – it was a lot of fun playing around with color again.

I really like your still life art. More, please.
Hi Ruth, thank you and nice to see you again! I continue to be absent from blogging, but never far from my thoughts. Hope you are well and have a wonderful holiday.
Lovely work Mary ma’am!
Best wishes 🙂
Thank you and much appreciated!
I agree, Will Kemp is an excellent teacher! 🙂
He is awesome painter and instructor. I just completed his floral program – love it and was pleased with the overall video series. Thanks!
Mmm – lovely!
Thank you my friend for your generous comment!!
Hi Mary! Would you take a look at my last post “a suggestion ” whenever you have time please ?
Sorry for the late response, I’ll go check it out.
Good to see you back here on your blog, Mary — an apple for you!
Lovely work. Thanks for sharing.
Good to see you too Cynthia, it is great to be back. Thanks very much for your nice comment and hope you have a wonderful week ahead.
So good seeing you back, Mary and believe me when I tell you – looking at your apple, you are not at all ‘rusty’! 😉 xx
Wonderful surprise and great to see you again Marina – I hope ass is well with you. I’m hoping to catchup with your blog to see what you have been up too. Thank you for kind thoughts ~ hope you have a great weekend my friend.
Hi, my dear Mary! It’s wonderful to see you back too! All is well, just too much in my daily schedule, but I am gradually working it out! A beautiful weekend to you too!!! 🙂 xx
They’re interesting colours and textures, Mary, and I’m sure that painting will be therapeutic. My husband uses Youtube for all kinds of things, including changing ceiling light fittings! Took him a day or two 🙂 🙂 I hope that the troubles are behind you now. Wishing you good health and happiness.
Missed you Jo, great to see you. Thank you for your thoughts on the painting. Oh yes the youtube has been used for many things in our household as well – just think how cumbersome changing the ceiling light fittings would have been without the internet. There are some great uses for this medium – meeting you is one. Hope you have a lovely weekend!
Family first – always! But it’s great to see you back here again.
Thank you Fiona and happy to see you again.
I have missed you, Mary, and your intrepid painting and learning. The Yellow Apple is serene and so very lovely. I especially appreciate the definition of dimension with the tabletop and shadow.
Hi Jet so good to see you. Thank you for your kind comments and generous read on the painting – it feels great to be back painting with color once again.
Nice to see you at work again, Mary. Family comes first, though.

Beautifully done Mary! Hope things are sorted on the home front. Take care 🙂
Thanks madhu , all is well. Good to see you again.
Your apple looks real enough to eat! I have been absent from blogging for so long that I didn’t realise you had also stepped back. It’s nice to be back, isn’t it, but I must admit there were times in recent months when I thought my blogging days were over.
Hi gallivanta, thanks for your fun response to the painting. I do understand and sometimes it takes a lot of energy to maintain blogging but it is a good medium with many benefits.
gorgeous light and color!! 🙂

You’re welcome 😊
Hi Mary, great to see you back and using colour again. The tempting juicy fullness of your apple reminds me of Renoir’s peaches.
My very best,
Paul
You are so kind Paul, thank you for your gracious words – Renoir, I only wish!! Good to see you and looking forward to seeing your latest writings.
So lovely to see you here Mary…I have been thinking about you a great deal. Very good to see you painting, it will help, and as always, sensitive and beautiful work. Janet x
Great to see you again Janet, I’ve thought about you as well – I can only imagine the beautiful pieces you’ve been creating over the summer. I’m happy to be painting with color again and learning a new medium, it’s been a good experience. Hope you have a lovely day ~
When I’m dealing with personal challenges, my colors turn muddy… when the colors run clear again I know that the crisis has moved downstream.
Your apple is lovely, and it is strong and ‘stands alone’ — well done!
I suspect that your period of inward reflection and incubation was important for a time out, and now you’re moving forward again….
So good to see you again Lisa. Thank you for your sensitivity – you understand. Acrylics are an interesting medium, but I do like the challenge in figuring out how to load and use brushes, mixing colors and techniques for laying on the paint. It’s been a fun experience – I’m not loose yet with the paint, but hopefully it will come once I gain some confidence. I hope you are well my friend.
wow. I love the way the light hit the apple.
Thanks very much – nice to meet you and thank you for visiting my blog.
Bravo, Mary. Delighted to see you painting!
Hi Tom, great to see you. Thanks very much – I felt like I was learning how to paint all over again. But was a lot of fun!
Lovely painting, Mary. Nice to see your artwork again. I’ve also been absent.
I’m so glad to see you Sylvia – I’ve been thinking about you and your husband with Hurricane Irma, hoping you are both okay and your house was untouched. Thanks so much for your kindness ~
Lovely, Mary! A very simple subject, yet, I want to pare it, put it in a pie and bake it.
Wonderful!
Resa, love your response. Thanks very much! I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up too ~

Good to see you again Hien. Thank you so much for your kind response and gracious words (if only you could see some that won’t see the light of day [I gessoed right over them, lol]). It was a good study to break the ice and begin again. Thanks again ~
Absolutely gorgeous!
