A Seagull and The Boat – acrylic painting

“Overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now.”  Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull

A tribute to my friend who passed away from ALS.  A progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.  The quote from Jonathan Livingston Seagull couldn’t be more right – live in the here and now – you never know what tomorrow brings.

A Seagull and The Boat is an acrylic painting (8×10) done on canvas paper – it was painted using mainly Liquitex and Golden brands.  This painting was the final piece I did for an upcoming auction being held in FL.  I was pleased that they accepted it and is my hope that it goes home with a lucky bidder and the organization reaches their goal in raising money that will go toward caring for women and children.

Thank you Judy for your kind and generous words – they mean a lot and are much appreciated. Thinking of all those crazy and scary Halloween decorated roads over there in New Hampshire ~ can’t believe it’s that time of year already. Thanks again!

  11. Paul Beech says:

    Dear Mary,

Your painting is a balm to the soul, the hurly-burly of life lost to the salty song of the ocean as your seagull contemplates the lonely boat. I love the Richard Bach quote too.

Lucky the bidder who takes your painting home to treasure, and fingers crossed the auction achieves its target.

    My very best,

    Paul

    • Mary says:

Thank you Paul, your writing here reads like a short story and I love it. Thank you for seeing the scene and bringing it to another level with your quiet, but powerful imagination ~ means a lot. I hope this finds you and Maureen well. I look forward to seeing our newest writings and what you have been up to. Thank you again ~

  12. As you know, seeing a painting in person is so much better than viewing a photo on a computer screen. However —- this is stunning! The primary focus of the boat is really really nice, yet that water, oh my goodness, it could not be rendered any better by any one!

I am so sorry about the loss of your friend, but what a lovely tribute.

    • Mary says:

Great to hear from you my friend, you must be very busy these days as your exhibition is just around the corner. The results will be fantastic, as your work is a visual experience for the viewer. Wish I could be there to see the show in person. Thank you so much for your read on the painting, I really appreciate it coming from an artist whose work I have long admired.

  13. Resa says:

Splendid! I adored the painting immediately. After finding out what it is going to auction for, I am honoured to know you, albeit on-line. Make art, not war. You are beautiful.

  17. Superb sea. Well worth the click

  18. Good morning dear Mary, sorry I haven’t been around much this year…it seems that I have done a great deal of travelling:) You are so right…to live in the moment is the only way, because life is fragile. As artists we are most fortunate to ‘stop and stare’ a lot…..and focus which brings us into each and every moment.
Another beautiful and gentle image. Thank you and hope all is well with you…janet 🙂

    • Mary says:

So good to see you Janet – I too have been away a lot this year from blogging. Not traveling as you, except two weeks ago to go see my Mother and family – the visit was wonderful. Thank you for being so kind in your comments about life and as an artist. I hope all is going well for you and that you Fall classes were filled with amazing students who couldn’t get enough of your artist talents and knowledge. Thank you my dear friend.

      • Thank you so much Mary. Autumn in Portugal was fantastic, thank you. Very glad to hear that you had a good visit with your Mother and family – and of course very pleased to see that you are making beautiful work. Happy creating my friend. Janet 🙂

  19. Aimée says:

I love how you captured light and how it ‘lives’ beautifully in your composition, the seagull, the ocean, the boat and sand. My heart felt glad to SEE this, this morning before I face a stressful, busy day at work.
    Thank you, Mary.

    • Mary says:

You are welcomed Aimee and glad the painting brought a bit of quiet calm before your hectic day begins. I totally understand and really appreciate your kind words. Hope your day goes perfect without any hitches ~

  20. Such a beautiful peaceful painting, I actually thought it was a photograph, it’s true we need to live in the moment and be grateful for every minute in the day. 🌹

  21. Nice painting I like how you did the sand, the seagull adds a lot of interest without being too distracting, and it leads your eye right to the boat.

  22. lulu says:

Lovely and I so admire your talent.

  23. Gallivanta says:

I love this one, Mary. A beautiful tribute post to your friend. JLS is definitely right.

I really love the way the boat came out

  26. I’m sorry to hear about your friend, Mary. The painting is perfect.

  27. neihtn2012 says:

This is a great painting in every sense and I hope it will win big money at the auction.

  28. Yes, live in the here and now! Nice to find your lovely work this afternoon. May the bidding go high for a good cause – the winner will be fortunate to have this piece of art! Cheers!

    • Mary says:

Yes, cheers Coastal – hope that it brings much joy for the bidder and $’s for the organization. Thank you for taking the time to comment – I really appreciate it.

  29. Lovely, Mary. It’s such a happy little boat looking forlorn.
